SPRING EISNER LECTURE: Jillian Tamaki in Conversation with Glynnis Fawkes

The Center for Cartoon Studies, The Leslie Center for Humanities at Dartmouth,, and the Will and Ann Eisner Family Foundation present Jillian Tamaki in conversation with Glynnis Fawkes.

Attention Upper Valley Community! Award-winning artist and creator, Jillian Tamaki is our featured speaker for the annual Spring Eisner Lecture! In addition, our award-winning cartoonist and faculty member, Glynnis Fawkes will be moderating! We are very excited, and we hope to see on Thursday, April 20, at 5 PM for the free lecture at Dartmouth College’s Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences, Room 001. We hope you will join us!

1177 BC graphic novel from Glynnis Fawkes

Coming in 2023 from Princeton University Press, Glynnis Fawkes is adapting Eric Cline’s 1177 BC as a graphic novel. Archaeologist Cline’s book traces the downfall of the many interconnected civilizations of the Late Bronze Age. And now Glynnis is bringing it to life: “imagining life in the ancient world, drawing ancient art, and figuring out the tech side of putting this book together.”

CCS Alum and Faculty in The New Yorker

Congratulations to Lillie Harris ’21 and Daryl Seitchik ’18 with cartoons in recent issues of The New Yorker! The New Yorker is one of those pinnacles of achievement for a lot of cartoonists, so a lot of hard work goes into getting a comic accepted. Many CCS alum and faculty cartoons have appeared in The New Yorker! The November 20th The New Yorker “Daily Shouts” featured faculty Glynnis Fawkes cartoon “2020 As A Newborn” which reflects on parenting during a pandemic.

In Any Era, Remarkable Talent Needs Help To Take Root

This year’s annual fundraising comic imagines two revered and iconic Victorian-era writers attending The Center for Cartoon Studies. Whereas time-traveling Brontë sisters may be a stretch, exceptionally talented international creators moving to Vermont to hone their craft and launch their careers is not. With its rigorous curriculum and nurturing community, The Center for Cartoon Studies is a school like no other.

CCS faculty member Glynnis Fawkes created this year’s comic. Her graphic novel, Charlotte Brontë Before Jane Eyre was published this fall to critical acclaim. The New York Times called it “emotionally nuanced and visually stunning.” Though a lot has changed since the Victorian times, the challenges facing young artists, especially women, are still fierce.

Seattle: Short Run Comix + Arts Festival

Short Run 2019

Short Run is coming on November 9 in Seattle, WA, and despite being on the opposite coast from The Center for Cartoon Studies, you can find some CCS grads with their comics. With a focus on comics, Short Run includes all sorts of self-publishers and small press. Free to the public!

Disney-Hyperion & Cartoon Studies Continue Young Adult Graphic Novel Series

Sixth Book to Release in September

White River Junction, Vermont – The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) and Hyperion Books for Children have renewed their partnership to produce Glynnis Fawkes’ Charlotte Brontë Before Jane Eyre, the sixth book in a young adult graphic novel series based on the lives of famous historical figures.

Charlotte Brontë Before Jane Eyre releases September 24th, includes an introduction by Vermont Cartoonist Laureate Alison Bechdel. This graphic biography presents Charlotte Brontë and her sisters as they struggle to make a name for themselves in an era where women were discouraged from pursuing a career.

The Center for Cartoon Studies faculty member Glynnis Fawkes has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and her comics have been nominated for numerous awards. Many of her comics have appeared in Daily Shouts on TheNewYorker.com. Her books include Persephone’s Garden (Secret Acres) and Reign of Crumbs (Kilgore). She is a recipient of a 2019-20 Vermont Arts Council Creation Grant.

The Center for Cartoon Studies presents Charlotte Brontë Before Jane Eyre by CCS faculty Glynnis Fawkes came out from Hyperion Books on September 24. Jane Eyre was born out of a magnificent, vivid imagination, a deep cultivation of skill, and immense personal hardship and tragedy. Charlotte cast an empathetic lens on characters often ignored by popular literature of the time, questioning societal assumptions with a sharp intellect and changing forever the landscape of western literature. With an introduction by Alison Bechdel, Charlotte Brontë Before Jane Eyre presents a stunning examination of a woman who battled against the odds to make her voice heard.

CCS graduates to exhibit and present at MICE expo in Cambridge

MICE, the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo, is coming up on October 19 and 20 in Cambridge, MA. A perennial favorite, MICE is showcase space for artists and writers in the greater-Boston area working in the field of comics. The show is free and open to the public of all ages. And you can find lots of CCS grads and instructors tabling and in various workshops throughout the weekend.

The Cartoonist Studio Prize is back for it’s sixth year. Two creators, one each for print and online, are selected each year and receive $1,000. Every year, the judges are Slate’s Jacob Brogan, a CCS representative (this year, Kevin Czap), and a guest judge (this year, Andrew Farago from San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum). Submissions are currently open an any English comic published in 2017 is eligible, so submit before the deadline, January 31, 2018.
