CCS at Graphic Medicine Conference in Ireland

The Center for Cartoon Studies is heading to Ireland for the annual Graphic Medicine Conference. CCS president and co-founder, Michelle Ollie, along with several alumni and CCS fellows will be participating in the traveling conference.

Cartoonist and comics librarian Natalie Norris ‘20 will discuss “Harnessing the Transformational Magic of Graphic Memoir to Process Trauma.” J.D. Lunt ‘16 will present, “Comics, Oral History, and Sharing the Magic of St. Dorothy’s Rest, the Oldest No Cost Health Camp in California.” Michelle Ollie will lead a design talk, “Using Design to Improve Accessibility.”

CCS graduates to exhibit and present at MICE expo in Cambridge

MICE, the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo, is coming up on October 19 and 20 in Cambridge, MA. A perennial favorite, MICE is showcase space for artists and writers in the greater-Boston area working in the field of comics. The show is free and open to the public of all ages. And you can find lots of CCS grads and instructors tabling and in various workshops throughout the weekend.

This lecture is open to the public.

Cara Bean is the author of Draw 500 Funny Faces and Features and has been teaching art in the United States for thirteen years. Her work has been featured in Pen America Illustrated, The Women’s Review of Books, and Teaching Arts Magazine. She provides public drawing and creativity workshops that explore how the beginning of complex ideas emerge from the simple act of doodling on paper. Cara has taken a leave from her teaching position to focus on creating comics that speak directly to kids about mental health. She is The Center for Cartoon Studies Cornish Residency Fellow.

CCS Alum in Best American Comics 2018

The list for Best American Comics 2018 is out, and CCS alum are well represented in the Notable Comics. Though the Notable Comics are not included as excerpts in the book, they are listed in a section from the series editor, Bill Kartalopoulos, to showcase the variety and quality of the comics field for the time period. This edition’s guest editor is Phoebe Gloeckner, creator of The Diary of a Teenage Girl (North Atlantic Books, 2015).
