CCS founding board member Ana Merino releases ILLUSTRATING SPAIN IN THE U.S., a collection of comics and scholarly essays

New books alert! The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) founding board member Ana Merino published a collection of comics and scholarly essays with Fantagraphics Books in January. ILLUSTRATING SPAIN IN THE U.S. discusses the often overlooked contributions made by Spanish immigrants throughout U.S. history. An accompanying comics exhibit curated by Merino is on display until 3/6 in Washington, D.C. at the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain.

Founding Board Member Ana Merino to Deliver Keynote at International Comic Arts Forum

Ana Merino, The Center for Cartoon Studies founding board of trustee member, is giving the keynote address at the International Comic Arts Forum. On Thursday April 4 at 9:15 in Davenport, Iowa, Ana will be presenting “Comics Reinventing Creativity in the Museum,” having curated four comics exhibitions. Later, on Friday April 5 at 10:45 am, she will moderate the panel “U.S. Chicanx Comics.” The panel will include José Alaniz from the University of Washington, John Petrus from Grinnell College, and Corey Creekmur from the University of Iowa.

Art Spiegelman Awarded the MacDowell Medal

Art Spiegelman is the first-ever cartoonist to receive the Edward MacDowell Medal. MacDowell is one of the nation’s leading contemporary arts organizations, and it has been awarding this medal annually since 1960 to artists who have made an outstanding contribution to American culture.

The International Comic Arts Forum (ICAF) is dedicated to promoting the scholarly study and appreciation of comic art, including comic strips, comic books, comics albums and graphic novels, magazine and newspaper cartooning, caricature, and comics in electronic media.
